Yesterday I caught a train to Kyneton to deliver some stock to the wonderful 'Stockroom' run by Magali and Jason. I had google maps to guide me from the station to the store and was a little scared by the idea of a 2.5km walk into town, but it was lovely! Past the botanical gardens, loads of shops, farmers market and these cows. Am feeling inspired to just hop on the train and go country more frequently.

I took a road trip to Geelong on Tuesday to visit the lovely ladies at Redox Jewellery Studio and drop off some work. It was actually really wonderful to leave Melbourne for a day and I also got to check out the Mill Markets, where I purchased an AMAZING navy wool hat. Think Picnic at Hanging Rock.

Anyhow, pictured below is a new piece that I made for them. I think it is my current favourite - am such a sucker for yellow gold.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I am so happy to be part of the Downsizing exhibition. The gallery director and curator of Downsizing, Melanie Katsalidis, was wonderfully supportive of me using an idea that I have been working on for the past 6 months that builds on the 'At that Moment' project I completed at the end of 2010.

'Night Blooming Cereus' is an ongoing series that uses the Victorian Language of Flowers (a system of encoding bouquets with sentiment), wrist corsages and photography to weave a narrative around a group of imaginary high-school students attending an imaginary high-school dance. The corsages are constructed of both sterling silver and living elements, the later of which will wilt and die - hence the title, which can be translated to ‘transient beauty’.

Throughout the Downsizing exhibition the corsages and photographs will be changed on a regular basis to encourage viewer interaction and add a sense of performance.

Sequin-Tooth Tiger is a collection that combines distinctly man-made elements and technologies, such as ornate beading and rapid prototyping, alongside earthy materials and lo-fi hand techniques. It seeks to create a small world of intricate pieces that initially appear as though they could have evolved in the natural environment, but upon closer inspection are comprised of sequin shapes and faceted stones.

I imagine a Sequin-Tooth Tiger roaming sleekly through a landscape of these pieces, occasionally losing one of his timber teeth, whereupon I collect it, string it on some silk, and wear it proudly as an amulet.

New work! For the past few months I have been working on the Vaguely Pagan collection and it shall be in Alice Euphemia as of Thursday. The range will be under 'Kim Victoria'.

The ‘Vaguely Pagan’ series developed through playing with different formations of twigs, branches and twine. As I was making, I realised that they had a sort of mystical, amulet-like quality. I aimed to make pieces that seemed as though they may have occurred naturally within the environment, with just a few clues (and a smattering of beads and sequins) to indicate the touch of a human hand.

The pieces are made from 925 silver, timber, stones, paint, pearls, silk thread and varnish. Stay tuned for some gold to come...

I have recently been working on a project based around wrist corsages and the american prom. Here is the outcome and the artist statement:

In her book Prom Night: Youth, Schools & Popular Culture, Amy Best declares that ‘The prom is a deeply conformist space…’and perhaps this is part of its appeal. The prom is melting pot of social expectation, ritual and sexuality and it offers up the choice of whether to fight the stereotypes or embrace them. In response to my research I wanted to make works that offered a statement about the American prom. I also hoped to employ materials that were not actually living, but still possessed the delicacy and fragility of natural flowers.

I have made three corsages for three of the people studied in my research. Two are fictional and one is a semi-imagined version of a real person. One is for Brenda Walshe (Beverley Hills 90210), one for Andie Walsh (Pretty in Pink) and one is for Constance McMillen. Each corsage is encoded with a message using the Victorian Language of Flowers sensibility.

Hmmmm...is it possible to become too obsessed with american teen culture? I blame it on being born in the 80's. Who's with me?

Sometimes I am asked to make personalised collage necklaces. They are fantastically fun as I get to find out a few bits and pieces about the person who will receive the piece and work this into the design. I construct them through a mixture of hand cutting and pasting using images from vintage books and also use the computer. The final image is transferred onto timber ply. I am currently studying jewellery at uni so have the absolute privilege of being forced to develop my conceptual work. And, so, here some of it is...

These drawings stemmed from some objects and jewellery that were intended to give form to breath and to encourage interaction between person/object/jewellery. The works are made from bubble-blowing solution, ink, dye and some other mixed media. They were shown as part of my 'Catch Your Breath' exhibition held at Design A Space in December. Now my challenge is how to make them into a three dimensional 'something'.
